Janie Lowe

Artist statement

I remember when I was a kid growing up in Idalou, Texas, my mom always told me to look up at the sky, that’s where we find beauty in the West Texas landscape.  I have loved skies and sunsets ever since.

Janie Lowe graduated in 1986 from Texas Tech University with a BFA in Illustration and received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 1991.

Her paintings have been shown and collected nationally, including the Kaiser Permanente permanent collection.  She is a member of Oil Painters of America and in 2018 was selected to be in the 27th Annual National Juried Show at the Steamboat Springs Art Museum.

Her work has also been published with Random House books and The New York Times, among other publications.   Additionally, she illustrated The Great Ridley Rescue, a book about the endangered Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle.

From 2005 to 2015, Lowe took a break from paining.   She co-founded YOLO Colorhouse, an eco-friendly architectural paint company.  After selling the company in 2015, she is back to painting and pursuing art as a profession.  She serves on the board of Portland Open Studios and volunteers teaching art with Latino Network.  She lives in Portland, Oregon with her partner and border collie and enjoys hiking, gardening, surfing and traveling.
