Biography / Artist Statement
Janelle Barrington Spivey is a full-time self-taught artist whose exceptional talent and dedication have garnered widespread recognition in the art world. In 2024, she was honored with the YWCA Woman of Excellence award in Arts and Culture, a testament to her significant contributions to the artistic community. Her work has been prominently featured in numerous Santa Fe and Lubbock art galleries, where her artwork captivated audiences and earned critical acclaim.
Known for her diverse portfolio, Janelle has left her creative imprint on various establishments, including the iconic Two Docs Brewery and Burklee Hill with her stunning murals and wine labels. She has also installed murals at Rouge Hair Salon and Miguel’s. Her artistic prowess has been showcased at esteemed venues such as LHUCA and the exclusive Art on the Llano Estacado held by the Museum of Texas Tech University. This is an invitation-only exhibition further solidifying her reputation as a distinguished artist.
With a string of accolades to her name, including, featured in Lubbock Magazine, exhibits in multiple galleries and businesses, including Tornado Gallery, McLarry Modern Gallery, Canyon Road Contemporary Art, McPherson Cellars, Covenant Children’s Hospital, The Funky Door, Trilogy Cellars, The Wine Nest, Hemline, WTHBA Parade of Homes, WTHBA Fall Home Tours, The Medici Circle 5×7, set painting for Ballet Lubbock’s The Nutcracker, First and third-place awards at the highly competitive Lubbock Arts Festival Juried Gallery and countless art collector’s.
Janelle continues to distinguish herself as a force to be reckoned with in the art world. Her talent has also been celebrated through multiple solo shows at Rick Husband International Airport in Amarillo, TX, and Preston Smith International Airport in Lubbock, TX where her work has left a lasting impression on travelers from around the world.
Through her evocative and versatile body of work, Janelle has established herself as a trailblazing artist, seamlessly blending creativity, skill, and passion to produce art that resonates deeply with audiences. Her unwavering dedication to her craft and her ability to create meaningful connections through art make her a true luminary in the contemporary art scene.
Janelle is also the proud owner of Broadway Contemporary Fine Art Gallery, a prestigious establishment that showcases the works of 35 local, national, and international artists, displaying a diverse collection of over 300 captivating works of art. Through her role as a gallery owner, she has demonstrated her commitment to promoting and supporting emerging and established artists, further solidifying her influence and impact within the art community. Her leadership in curating a vibrant and dynamic space for artistic expression underscores her dedication to fostering creativity and artistic excellence.
